The grapes are mainly old Grenache and Carignan vines grown on a northeast-facing slope on black shale soil, and are carefully hand-picked. Fermented under temperature control, they are subjected to long-term maceration and punch-down, and then aged in concrete tanks for 12 months. This results in a red wine with a concentrated fruitiness of raspberries and blackberries, a scent of garrigue, and a powerful yet fresh attack.

About the Winery

Clos del Rey

Clos del Rey

Founded in 2001 by father Jacques Montagné. The 25 hectares of vineyards owned are located at an altitude of 300m, in the heart of the Garrigue nature reserve, including rosemary, thyme and rockrose in the highest parcels of crus in the commune of Maury, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains near the Mediterranean Sea. Unparalleled terroir, with vineyards and garrigue as far as the eye can see, red earth, clay, limestone, white earth, sand, granite and countless others. Added to this, the different exposure to wind, rain and sun produces wines that are expressive, with strong character and exceptionally rich aromas. Joined by his son Julien in 2004, 'Clos del Rey' is a family-run producer dedicated to winemaking excellence on the Roussillon plateau. Originally the land where his grandparents produced table wine in Maury, the plateau in the south of France is ideal for growing fruit, with rare soil characteristics and delicacy, which allows the grapes to avoid drought conditions, remain fresh and store enough juice for the wine. Careful work ensures that the wines always express rich, elegant, moderately concentrated flavours and exquisite balance. All the plots are surrounded by garrigue, the soils are clay and limestone with a high iron content, resulting in remarkably rich, extractive wines with elegance and balance at the same time.
