Catalonia is considered to be distinct from other wine-producing regions in Spain due to its diversity of wine styles. Strong French influence can be seen in two of the best-known wines, Cava, a Champagne-style sparkling wine, and red table wine.
The climate is Mediterranean, with moderate rainfall in the warm coastal areas. The inland region is dry and similar to Spain's central plateau, but there are many cooler regions at the foot of the mountains and on higher ground, where the region's signature Cava grapes are grown.
Red wine is made from Tempranillo (locally called Ur de Libre), Garnacha, and Monastrell. There are many Bordeaux-type red wine varieties, which play an important role both in blends and on their own.
