[Pure expression of terroir]
Nuala was founded in 2010 by veterans of the French wine industry. The name "Nuala" means "purity" in Maori and symbolizes their approach to winemaking.
Winemaker Paul Maltung grew up at his family's Château Barère in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, where he learned the fundamentals of winemaking. He then gained experience at renowned European wineries and worked in Australia, brewing Pinot Noir and Riesling. He is now based in New Zealand, where he brings his extensive knowledge and passion to Nuala.
Paul believes that "nature does not lie" and prioritizes the expression of terroir. His approach is delicate and precise, aiming to maximize the individuality of the land while minimizing human intervention. For example, he uses wild yeast whenever possible, preserving the wine's natural flavor without altering its aroma. He also pursues a natural flavor by bottling the wine as is, without using filters whenever possible.
Nuala's identity is rooted in the earth itself. The ammonite fossil featured on the label is more than just a symbol; it is a tribute to the ancient soil that gives life to the vines. Petrified over thousands of years, this exquisite shell symbolizes the beautiful minerality, invigorating freshness and timeless character that is present in every bottle of Nuala.
