Wine from the South-West region (Sud-Ouest) has a long and checkered history. The rivers here play an important role, as they were the main trade routes bringing wine from the traditional regions of Cahors, Bergerac, Buzet and Gaillac to market.
The regions closest to Bordeaux produce wines in a similar style to Bordeaux, most of which are made from the same Bordeaux variety.
Further south, the wines are still similar to those in Bordeaux, but typically include varieties not used in Bordeaux, such as Tannat.
In areas close to the Pyrenees, wines are made from local varieties such as Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng.
