Ever since Victoria Ordóñez can remember, wine has been part of her life. Her father, José María Ordóñez, was a pioneer in the Spanish wine industry, selling fine wines throughout the province of Malaga since the 1950s. Victoria's own professional career took a different direction (she studied to become a doctor and obtained a doctorate in medicine), but in 2004 she decided to enter the wine business, initially combining it with her work as a health services manager.
Victoria left everything to Alois Kracher, an Austrian winemaker with whom she made Malaga wines until his death in 2007. At this time, her career took a new turn and she decided to concentrate solely on the world of wine, which had been the object of her passion: in 2015, she decided to recover the most emblematic native variety in the history of Malaga wine, the Pedro Ximenez variety from the Malaga Mountain Natural Park, in an ecological and sustainable way project. Her son, agronomist Guillermo Martín Ordóñez, is working with her on this project. He brings a technical perspective and offers his personal vision and creativity to the winery's various vintages.
Idea:
To make a difference, Victoria Ordóñez has been working with Pedro Ximénez, the pre-eminent variety of Málaga wine, which was grown in Málaga and gained international fame and renown between the 17th and 19th centuries.
The decision was made to add Pedro Ximénez de los Montes de Malaga to the wines. These wines, which were mostly dry, have not been produced to date after phylloxera. We have therefore been able to identify wines of this type with a reference to
faced with a risky and innovative project due to the lack of references. The research work led to the exploration of the Montes de Malaga, which includes the previously forgotten wine-producing regions of Malaga, Casabermeja and Colmenar. To find the virtually non-existent Pedro Jiménez, we had to research for months until we found a small plot of old vineyards.
This work was assisted by the Regulatory Commission of Málaga and Sierras de Málaga. In addition to introducing Pedro Ximenez from the Montes de Malaga Natural Park, Victoria Ordóñez is also betting on Moscatel in her new venture, a variety she has worked with throughout her professional career and knows well.
