[Biodynamicists trained by Gauby]
In the 1990s, Roy Richards and Mark Walford were importing Gérard Gauby's Roussillon wines to the UK. Gérard was convinced that the cool climate grapes of the Fenouilledes region, in the foothills of the Eastern Pyrenees in south-west France, had the potential to produce high-quality wines and proposed a partnership between the two to exploit this region.
Together they purchased the best plots of vineyard and an old house in the high-altitude village of Saint-Martin-de-Fenouillet, the heart of the vineyard. This house became Seurat's first cellar, and from the first vintage in 2001, the wines began to gain recognition for their purity, liveliness and uniqueness.
By 2008, the Saint-Martin facilities could no longer accommodate the expanding project, so the cellars and winery were relocated and restored to the former cooperative cellars in Prugnan, down the mountain on the D117. Gérard Standley, a winemaker who had worked in Bordeaux, joined the team, initially as co-director with Gérard Goby, before taking over the running of the domaine.
In 2012, Roy and Mark sold their wine importing company to Berry Bros & Rudd, and Mark took over the management and marketing of Le Soula.
In 2016, Wendy Wilson, with extensive experience in Loire and American vineyards, succeeded Gérard to lead the Le Soula team.
The vineyards have been organically farmed since the beginning and have been farmed biodynamically since 2008. Today, Le Soula wines are found in many countries around the world, on the lists of many top restaurants and respected importers.
