Domaine d'Anjou Banesi is gaining international acclaim as a winemaker quietly showcasing the potential of Roussillon. This cuvée, crafted primarily from Mourvèdre vines over 70 years old, offers a taut minerality derived from the chalky schist soil. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged for a long time, the winemaking process minimizes sulfites, showcasing the domaine's true essence. The quiet concentration of black fruit, nuances of thyme and juniper, and the firm tannins create a lingering finish. This expression of elegance overturns stereotypes of southern France.

Owning & Enjoying

Tasting notes
Deep ruby red.

The aroma that rises from the glass is a subtle blend of black currant and dark cherry fruit, layered with bay laurel, dried herbs, black pepper, and graphite-like minerality from the schist soil.

The mouth is dominated by dense fruit, but without excessive volume, and the taut acidity and fine-grained tannins form the backbone.

The oak is subtle, with a long finish that offers complexity of earth and spice, as well as salty minerality.

The structure becomes even more refined with age.

About the Winery

Domaine Danjou Banessy

Domaine Danjou Banessy

Located at Espira, a few kilometres away from Rivesaltes, Domaine Danjou-Banessy is an old family estate that was producing only fortified and dry rancio wines until Benoit took over from his father 10 years ago. His brother, Sebastien, an English teacher, joined the domaine full time 5 years ago. They are now producing dry whites and reds from very old vines of local grapes such as their rare and original carignan gris. Their soil has always been free from any chemicals; their father and grandfather were bio before anyone else.  They are as non-interventionist as possible in the cellar. Benoit and Sebastien are Catalans but friends with many neo-vignerons that came from all over the world to Roussillon to produce great wines. Tradition and open-mindedness could explain the quality of their wines.
