The 1990 Pichon Longueville Baron has always delivered outstanding performance. It's now reaching its peak, and it's exceptionally impressive. The rim shows a subtle brick color, and the bouquet is a perfect blend of red berries, cedar, a touch of graphite, crushed rose petals, and censer notes. These aromas make you want to be enveloped in them. The palate is perfectly balanced, and while it may not be as structured as it once was (due to the softer tannins), it instead offers a secondary stage typical of Pauillac, almost Burgundy-like in texture. It's taut, gaining weight in the mouth and finishing with a slight acidity. Pichon Baron simply delivers a refined, satisfying experience. I've previously written that Pichon Baron is superior to many 1990 first growths, and I still believe that's true.
