【二つ星】ドメーヌ・ゴワゾ、RVF『フランス最優秀ワイン・ガイド2026』で昇格

La Revue du vin de France (RVF) is one of the most authoritative voices in French wine. In its Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2026, Domaine Goisot has been awarded two stars.

Two stars, second only to the top rank of three, marks an estate out as one of the definitive growers in France. And yet, when we heard the news, our first thought was neither "at last" nor "how surprising", but something closer to: this is simply how this family has always worked.

Why it feels that way takes a little explaining. Allow us to trace four hundred years.

Fourteen generations, since the late sixteenth century

Domaine Goisot lies in the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux, in the Yonne in northern Burgundy - about twenty minutes by car south-west of Chablis.

The first vine-grower to appear in the family records is Germain Goisot, in the late 1500s. Ever since, this family has tended vines in this village. Eugene and Antonia replanted the vineyards after phylloxera. Raoul and Genevieve rebuilt them across two world wars. Hugues and Marie-Claude brought in a tractor in 1955 and a straddle tractor in 1957, and turned the estate towards bottling and selling its own wine.

With Guilhem, the present head of the house, the family reaches its fourteenth generation.

Four centuries is perhaps not so rare in the world of wine. What is rare is not the length of it, but that this family has endured by changing rather than by conserving.

1974, aged sixteen. And then 1979

Jean-Hugues Goisot joined the vines in 1974, at sixteen. In 1979, Ghislaine joined him.

From that point on, Goisot changed steadily - and never once turned back.

1990: the conversion to organic viticulture begins. 2001: full organic certification across the estate.

Eleven years of conversion. Quite what nerve that took, in northern Burgundy at that time, on land routinely beaten down on price for the simple crime of not being Chablis, we can only imagine.

In the mid-2000s their son Guilhem joined the family business alongside Marie. Biodynamic certification (Demeter) followed in 2005.

Ghislaine retired in 2021, after forty-two years in these vineyards.

"Great wine is born of great growing" - the Domaine's motto is, we think, less a slogan than a plain description of the choices they have actually made over more than thirty years.

Not "next door to Chablis" - the Auxerrois in its own right

The stretch of country between Saint-Bris and Irancy has long been described as the land next to Chablis.

Look at the ground, though, and the story changes.

Goisot's vineyards sit on Late Jurassic limestone. Kimmeridgian limestone and marl, layered in places to a depth of eighty metres. This is the same geology that underwrites the greatness of Chablis.

The Auxerrois, in other words, is no understudy to Chablis. It is the same ancient seabed, inherited from a different angle.

When a fossil becomes the name of a cuvee

Read the names on these bottles and it becomes very clear what the family is trying to reflect.

Take Exogyra Virgula. It is the scientific name of a small fossil oyster that marks the Kimmeridgian strata. Not the appellation, not the family name - the shell that proves the geology is what goes on the label.

Take Le Biomont. A south-east-facing parcel at 238-251m, on Jurassic limestone shot through with red clay. Ammonite fossils come out of this ground. Vine age runs from ten to eighty years - four generations of vines sharing the same 2.13 hectares.

Take La Ronce. A north-facing hectare at 175-193m, on white Kimmeridgian marl, with yields held down to 30-35 hL/ha.

Every parcel differs in altitude, aspect, geology and vine age. So every name differs too. The Goisot range reads as a geological cross-section of the Auxerrois.

Made by subtraction

The thinking in the cellar is entirely consistent.

Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. No batonnage. Sulphur kept to a minimum, with only a small adjustment at bottling where needed. New oak is almost never used: the norm is thirteen to fifteen months in barrels of one to four years (Le Biomont alone sees 20% new).

Nothing is added. Which is why the taut acidity and saline grip that the limestone produces stand up as the wine's own outline. That salty finish common to every Goisot white is not technique. It is the taste of the ground.

Two stars, confirmed in the glass

Six bottles of contrasting character from the cuvees Cepages imports.

Bourgogne Aligote 2024

Pale lemon-yellow. White flowers and green apple on the nose; white peach, lime and a saline mineral thread. A wine that dismantles whatever assumptions you brought about Aligote. Start here.

Saint-Bris Exogyra Virgula 2023

100% Sauvignon Blanc. Sharp, taut acidity against generous fruit; citrus, white flowers, flint. Saint-Bris - the only appellation in Burgundy permitted to name Sauvignon - at its most convincing.

Cotes d'Auxerre Blanc 2023

100% Chardonnay. Pear and grapefruit with a faint spice of ginger. Lovely texture and a long finish. Try it with scallop carpaccio, herb-roasted chicken, or a good chevre.

Cotes d'Auxerre Corps de Garde Blanc 2022

From 250-270m, vines of forty to sixty years. Pale gold; pear and apple, hazelnut and the toasted note of brioche. Kimmeridgian salinity gives it tension, and the finish carries citrus peel and white pepper. Built to age.

Cotes d'Auxerre Corps de Garde Rouge 2023

100% Pinot Noir. Garnet with a ruby glow. Forest fruit, spice, liquorice and a roasted note. Fine-grained tannins and elegance with real reach.

Cotes d'Auxerre Le Biomont 2020

From the 2.13 hectares where the ammonites lie. Ripe fruit, cinnamon and florals. A delicate outline and an energetic, powerful finish. 93 points from RVF, and the clearest statement of how far this Domaine has come.

In closing - on being the thread between

Two stars did not arrive out of nowhere one morning.

A father who stood in these vines at sixteen in 1974. A mother who joined in 1979 and stayed forty-two years. A conversion begun in 1990 and certified in 2001. Biodynamics in 2005. And Guilhem, the fourteenth generation.

What Goisot's wines carry is a flavour, certainly - but also a way of handing time from one pair of hands to the next.

And for now, that work can be met from around 5,000 yen. This is unlikely to remain true for long. Do try a glass before the rest of the world catches up.
