The beautiful golden color gives off an exotic aroma of citrus, pear, and peach. The rich and powerful body is blended with a stony minerality, leading to a very long finish. While it has a strength comparable to that of Montrachet, at its best, the minerality and refined finesse stand out, creating an overwhelming finish.

The vineyard covers an area of 0.30 hectares facing west on the Pernand-Vergelesses side and the vines are 45 years old.
The soil is characterized by a high proportion of limestone and marl.

About 2022

The 2022 vintage produced high-quality, rich wines with bountiful yields for both red and white wines.
Although there was some frost in April, serious damage was avoided. This was due to a later than usual bud break, which was partly due to new pruning techniques. Summer-like weather continued from April to early May, which led to rapid growth in the vineyards, keeping the vineyard teams busy. Flowering took place in late May, and took place under generally favourable conditions.
100mm of rain fell in late June, providing the vines with a valuable reserve of moisture to help them survive the next six weeks of dryness and heat (only about 25mm of rain, and maximum temperatures of 30-35°C). Harvest began on 25th August and finished on 31st August.
The sugar content was fairly uniform with only slight variations around 12.5%. The pH was ideal and consistent across all cuvées. Malolactic fermentation of the white wines proceeded smoothly after the main fermentation.
Ultimately, the vintage produced wines of exceptional balance and purity of fruit depth. The quality and abundance of the yields are reminiscent of 1999, but the quality of the white wines is closer to 2002.

About the producer

Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

[A pure cuvée that weaves the history and terroir of Volnay into the future]

The history of Volnay, once home to the Dukes of Burgundy, and the magnificent chapel that gives the Domaine its name are intertwined. Originally, Clos de la Chapelle was part of the Domaine de la Bousse d'Or. In 1865, Victor Boillot merged them into a single Domaine, and in 1937, when the INAO (National Institute of Appellation of Origin) established the appellation, it became Clos de la Chapelle.

The estate has added nine appellations to the three plots owned by Louis Boillot: Pommard-les-Champlains, Volnay-en-Carrel, and Volnay-Clos-de-la-Chapelle, giving it a total of 4 hectares of vineyards with 12 different terroirs, all Grand Cru and Premier Cru, and an annual production of approximately 1,500 cases.

In 2011, current owner Mark O'Connell purchased the vineyard and renamed it Domaine Clos de la Chapelle from Domaine Louis Boillot. With the goal of producing the purest wines possible, he immediately converted all of Domaine Clos de la Chapelle's vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming methods. His goal is to create wines that maximize the expression of each parcel's unique terroir, so he hand-picks the grapes and keeps human intervention to a minimum during the vinification process.
