In 1885, Scottish immigrant brothers James and William Rennie purchased land in Napa Valley and planted 60 acres of vineyards spanning the Rutherford and St. Helena AVAs. They built an innovative gravity-flow stone winery influenced by their uncle, Sir John Rennie, known for his work on the construction of London Bridge. However, due to a devastating fire and the spread of phylloxera, the winery closed in 1920.
The property changed hands several times until it was acquired in January 2020 by Florence and Daniel Cathiard, owners of Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux, France. With a deep respect for nature, the Cathiards continue the winemaking tradition.
The vineyards extend along the slopes of Mount Mayacamas, each vine carefully tended to as if it were a bonsai. The wines reflect a harmonious blend of terroir and human care. To enhance this expression, a new stainless steel winery and a horseshoe-shaped cellar have been renovated, incorporating Bordeaux expertise.
