In 1880, brothers James and William Rennie bid farewell to their homeland of Scotland and set sail for California, driven by their grand dream of success in Napa Valley. Five years later, they built a stone winery and planted vineyards across 60 acres spanning the Rutherford and St. Helena AVAs. Today, this same land is owned by the Cathiard family. "Founding Brothers" is crafted exclusively from estate-grown grapes to capture the unique character of this exceptional terroir.

Owning & Enjoying

Tasting notes
This wine has depth and concentration, expressing the true character of Rutherford. The aroma of dark cherry, chocolate, and subtle hints of eucalyptus unfold. It has fine tannins and a long, lingering finish, making it a true embodiment of its terroir.

Production

The grapes are gently de-stemmed and sorted using an optical sorting machine to select only the best fruit. They are transferred to fermentation tanks using gravity and undergo a maximum of five days of cold maceration. The fermentation temperature is kept below 28°C, and gentle techniques such as pumping over and punchdowns are employed. After 30 days of aging in tanks, the wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in new French oak.

Aging: 40% in new French oak barrels and 60% in large foudres for 16-18 months.

About the Winery

Cathiard Vineyard

Cathiard Vineyard

In 1885, Scottish immigrant brothers James and William Rennie purchased land in Napa Valley and planted 60 acres of vineyards spanning the Rutherford and St. Helena AVAs. They built an innovative gravity-flow stone winery influenced by their uncle, Sir John Rennie, known for his work on the construction of London Bridge. However, due to a devastating fire and the spread of phylloxera, the winery closed in 1920.
