The prestigious Domaine Marquis d'Angerville of Volnay is a pioneering producer that began bottling its own wines in the 1920s. They converted to biodynamic farming in 2006 and received certification in 2009. Their flagship 1er Cru vineyard, Taillepieds, is located on a steep, south-facing slope, and its lean, white, rocky soil produces wines with concentration and minerality. 2018 was a bountiful year blessed with ample sunshine, resulting in a vintage that combines both power and finesse.
Tasting Notes
Deep purplish-garnet in color. When swirled, complex aromas of cherry and blueberry fruit are intertwined with nuances of dark chocolate and orange peel, expanding with great depth. On the palate, smooth, powdery tannins and vibrant acidity provide structure, while concentrated fruit and minerality powerfully unfold. The finish is long, characterized by a crisp, mineral-driven aftertaste. While enjoyable now, the high quality of the tannins suggests excellent aging potential from around 2028 to beyond 2035.
Food Pairings
- Herb-roasted lamb
- Pan-seared duck breast (rosé)

Viticulture and Winemaking
- Converted to biodynamic farming in 2006 and received Demeter certification in 2009.
- One of Burgundy's foremost pioneers of estate bottling, with the family having started bottling their own wines in the 1920s.
- For the Premier Cru grapes, after destemming, maceration fermentation is carried out for 8-10 days, managed by remontage (pumping over) rather than pigeage.
- Approximately 25% new oak is used for aging.
- The Taillepieds vineyard covers 1.07 hectares, located on a steep, south-facing slope in the upper part of the Volnay hillside.
- The soil is lean, whitish, and rocky.
- The steep slope, thin soil layer, and strong sunshine produce the characteristic delicacy and elegance of Taillepieds.
- The current owners are Guillaume d'Angerville and his daughter Margot.
