Charmes is said to be the largest and most opulent of the Meursault 1er Cru wines. However, in the hands of Antoine Jobard, the fruit takes on a purity like a taut crystal. Established around 1860, this is a fifth-generation family-run estate spanning 6 hectares. The principle inherited from his father, François, is the antithesis of "big, broad, and oaky" wines, instead focusing on "tight, minerally, complex, and refined" Meursault. This quiet, profound wine is born from 18 to 24 months of long-term barrel aging.

Tasting Comment

Pale, brilliant lemon yellow. The aroma is never showy, but rather introverted. Green apple, pear, and citrus peel are delicately intertwined with white flowers and chalky minerality. On the palate, the first impression is a crystal-like transparency and a straight, clear outline. The characteristic mellowness of Charmes slowly expands as if melting in the mouth, with a hint of richness emerging. The presence of new oak is subtle, with the dialogue between fruit and limestone taking center stage. The structure, which intensifies towards the finish, is simply superb. This is a long-aging Meursault where the concentration of 2020 and Jobard's austere style perfectly align at a high level.

Cultivation & Winemaking

  • Established around 1860, a fifth-generation family-run estate. Approximately 6 hectares of vineyards, with an annual production of about 32,000 bottles. 95% of production is white Meursault wine.
  • Changed to "Domaine Antoine Jobard" from the 2008 vintage (formerly François Jobard).
  • Short pruning, soil plowing, no synthetic pesticides. Meets the requirements for organic certification but chooses to remain uncertified to avoid paperwork.
  • Philosophy of prioritizing work in the vineyards to minimize intervention in the cellar.
  • Barrels are primarily from Damy. Uses Allier and Vosges oak, with new oak accounting for only about 20%.
  • One of the longest élévages in Meursault, with 18 to 24 months of barrel aging.
  • Minimal bâtonnage (lees stirring) for long-term aging.
  • Does not use large barrels such as demi-muids, maintaining standard-sized barrels (228L).
  • Owns four 1er Cru plots in Meursault: Blagny, Poruzots, Genevrières, and Charmes.
