Tasting note

Pale lemon yellow in appearance with a slight golden nuance. When swirled in the glass, the viscosity is moderate, suggesting the presence of minerality and calmness that comes from aging. The nose is tranquil and refined, with pure fruit notes of white flowers, pear, and white peach, layered with nuances of almond and hazelnut, powdery minerals reminiscent of limestone, and a subtle smokiness, which develop over time into impressions of honey, fennel, and salty notes like shells. The palate is surprisingly clear and firm. The rounded texture of the Grenache Gris is complemented by a firm acidity that tightens the overall texture, leading to a long, slender mineral finish. The wine is light thanks to its minimal batonnage, and the salty accents add dimension to the palate. The finish is extremely long, with subtle nuances of white pepper and flint lingering.

Winemaking & technical data

The name comes from an old tree plot (the "Iglesia Vella" plot) planted in 1954.

Soil/vineyard location: Old shale (slate) soil, north-facing slope, deep-rooted and demanding terroir.

Cultivation and winemaking management: Organic and biodynamic farming methods are used. Yields are limited.

Vinification and ageing: Fermented with wild yeast and aged in large barrels, large capacity foudres or old barrels. Lightly racked to retain acidity.

About this bottle

Grenache Gris, planted in 1954. Schist soil. Iglesia Vela, meaning "old church" in Catalan, is from a single plot located near the site of the village church. This plot gives the wine a rich minerality and a long finish. It has depth and complexity beyond that of schist soil, and is characterized by a saline finish. This is a truly pure bedrock cuvée.

About the producer

Domaine Le Roc des Anges

[Wine named after Angel, grown in 750 million year old schist]

Roc des Anges was founded in February 2001 by husband and wife duo Marjorie and Stéphane Gallé. Marjorie grew up near Côte Rôtie and has been involved with wine since she was a child. She trained with Yves Cuilleron and Pierre Gaillard in the Northern Rhône and then qualified in Montpellier.

The Domaine's name comes from a single Carignan vine planted on a quartz vein. The white soil, surrounded by black schist, is called Roc Blanc, meaning white rock. The angel is the symbol of the quartz vein soil, hence the name Roc des Anges (Rock of Angels).

The vineyard is built on very old schist (750 million years old), a soft, flaky layer of pure clay that has been compressed. The bedrock is less than one metre thick, providing ideal conditions for the vines to establish roots and recover even during the drought and heat that arrives in June.

While most of their wines are aged in concrete vats, aging in wooden barrels can transform a wine from hard and expressionless to soft and expressive, so they use mostly premium barrels from Burgundy (3-5 years old) with some new oak as well.

Although the rule is to "keep it simple," putting it into practice is the most difficult. Observe, taste, wait, and guide the wine in a direction that maximizes the expression of the terroir's characteristics. The conditions required for aging vary depending on the vintage.
