Domaine Perraud
[A new generation of Burgundy, mirroring the terroir of the Mâconnais]
Domaine Perraud is a family estate based in the village of La Roche-Vineuse, in the Mâconnais at the southern end of Burgundy.
Here, within sight of the great rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, Jean-Christophe Perraud set the domaine on its present course in 2005, with four generations of grape growing behind him.
The family had always sold its fruit to the cooperative, but he resolved to bottle under his own name.
Since 2008 every wine has been domaine-bottled, and the estate's reputation has climbed steadily year on year.
The vines lie on the clay-limestone soils characteristic of the Mâconnais and are planted to several varieties — Chardonnay above all, alongside Aligoté, Pinot Noir and Gamay.
That diversity of terroir yields a broad range of wines across a broad range of appellations.
The goal, as Jean-Christophe puts it, is to make Burgundy of real quality that plenty of people can actually enjoy.
And so it proves: his wines express the character of their sites honestly while offering purity of fruit and genuine approachability.
In the vineyard he has committed to sustainable farming, beginning organic trials in 2016 and formally starting conversion in 2021.
From the 2024 vintage the great majority of his parcels are due to be certified organic.
Treatments are based on copper and sulphur, supplemented by plant preparations such as horsetail and nettle, with care for the natural environment at the centre of the work.
More recently solar panels have gone up on the winery roof, generating around 40% of the estate's electricity and further reducing its footprint.
Lightweight bottles and recycled materials round out a vision of a sustainable future pursued through winemaking itself.
Domaine Perraud holds fast to the traditional Burgundian spirit while chasing a clean, high-purity style all its own.
Reflecting the richness of Mâconnais terroir, these are wines that mark the estate out as one of the new-generation Burgundy names to watch.
