Tasting note

It is a cherry color with a hint of violet, and shows very fruity characteristics. The juicy fruitiness and the tannins of the skin are well balanced, and the taste is like a candy without any complexity. The slight bitterness makes it easy to drink. The aroma is a fusion of blackberry and licorice with floral nuances of violets. When you put it in your mouth, it spreads throughout your mouth, is lactic and well-balanced, and is sweet and seductive overall.

Cultivation

This village wine is made from grapes harvested in the town of Abalos, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The vineyards, which are on calcareous soil, were first planted in the 1920s with the utmost respect for the environment.
Located 600m above sea level, it is well shaped by the Atlantic Ocean.

brewing

The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and crushed to allow the must to ferment, a small portion of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels, followed by 12 months of ageing in barrels of different ages to preserve the main tones of the grapes.

About this bottle

This cuvée, called Piès Negros, aims to pay homage to tradition and to the footsteps of the grape stompers of the past, a practice still practiced in the winery. This method, combined with the altitude of the vineyards, gives the wine a freshness and local character. It is the perfect wine to get to know Tempranillo and rediscover Rioja.

About the producer

Young Leaders Driving a New Era in Rioja

Artuke is a bodega in the Rioja region, known for an approach all its own that departs from the traditional blending and ageing practices of the area. The name Artuke is formed from the names of the two brothers, Arturo and Kike. They have devoted themselves to capturing the essence of individual vineyards and villages, refining their craft along the way.

Their wines are known for their great purity and focus, testament to their exceptional skill. The de Miguel family's winemaking journey began on a hillside affectionately known as Finca de los Locos, where their grandfather planted Tempranillo and Graciano. At first the family sold its wine in bulk, but in 1991 their father Roberto began bottling wine under his own name and selling it door to door.

Arturo joined the family business in 2003 after taking a master's degree in oenology, and Kike joined him in 2010. Their aim is to carry the estate's terroir-driven philosophy further still. They carried out soil studies across 32 parcels in Baños de Ebro, Ábalos and San Vicente, and adopted organic and sustainable farming. They also turned their backs on the barrel ageing demanded by Rioja's classification system, using neutral oak instead so that the distinctive character of each parcel stands out.

The de Miguel brothers produce three single-vineyard wines from old-vine fruit, as well as village wines blended from a selection of parcels. They also seek out old vines that can be brought back into production and put them to use. Although they lie close together around the same villages, Artuke's 32 parcels each differ in climate and soil, and those subtle differences are reflected in the wines. Arturo and Kike are devoted to expressing those nuances faithfully, aiming to convey the very essence of terroir in every glass.
