Tasting note

Colour: Deep ruby red with a hint of garnet on the rim. Aroma: Concentrated aromas of black fruits such as blackberry and cassis, layered with subtle hints of vanilla and toast due to aging, and subtle nuances of spices and herbs. Taste: Smooth and elegant on the palate. Rich fruit and supple tannins are in harmony, with the acidity tightening the overall flavor. From the mid-palate to the finish, oak nuances and a mineral feel linger for a long time.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

17th to 19th Centuries: The Founding and the Rise to Renown

The origins of winegrowing at Château Smith Haut Lafitte go back as far as the 17th century. The first to produce wine here was the owner of the time, an English merchant named George Smith. He bought land in the area and made wine there, and it is from him that the château takes its name. In the 18th century the estate went on to enjoy commercial success and built its reputation. From the end of the 18th century into the early 19th century in particular, Smith Haut Lafitte came to be held in high esteem in the Bordeaux region, and its name spread around the world.

The 20th Century: Changes of Ownership and Uneven Quality

During the 20th century the estate changed hands several times. Through the Second World War and the decades that followed in particular, the quality of the wines went through a long unsettled period. From the 1950s into the 1960s, however, the estate began to attract attention once again, and in the 1960s work to raise the quality of the wines got under way.

The 1990s to Today: The Cathiard Family and a New Era of Innovation

True innovation began after the Cathiard family took ownership in the 1990s. In 1996 they converted to biodynamic viticulture and began making wine with an emphasis on working in harmony with nature. Quality improved dramatically as a result, and the wines came to be highly rated by wine lovers and critics the world over.

The Estate and Its In-House Cooperage

The Cathiard family are not only committed to raising the quality of the wines; they have also invested energetically in the equipment and facilities the estate requires. Most striking of all is the fact that they make their own barrels. This allows them to fine-tune the ageing of the wines and to create a character entirely their own.
Two second wines The château also owns two second wines: Les Hauts de Smith and Le Petit Haut Lafitte. The first is elegant and richly flavoured, reflecting the château's style while adding a note of suppleness. The second is fruity and more approachable, a wine that can be enjoyed young.
