Chambolle-Musigny's most esteemed Premier Cru vineyard is "Les Amoureuses." The plot owned by Pousse d'Or is situated on the upper part, bordering the Grand Cru Musigny, and its gentle east-facing slope yields noble fruit. 2021 was a difficult year, with devastating spring frosts in April causing Chambolle village to lose nearly 80% of its yield. However, the surviving bunches were highly concentrated, resulting in a rare bottle that lacks the hardness of the calcareous minerals found in other cuvées, and instead boasts a more elegant and expansive aroma.

Tasting Notes

The appearance is a transparent, bright ruby color. The aroma features notes of red roses and peonies, followed by fresh fruit characteristics of raspberry and red cherry, distinguishing it from other vintages with a more elegant and expansive bouquet. The palate begins lightly, while ripe, fine tannins gradually build in intensity, creating layers of sustained finish rather than sheer power. The astringency is smooth, and the acidity is fresh, tightening the overall structure. It is still young, with the potential to develop further complexity with 5-8 more years of aging.

Food Pairing

  • Roasted duck breast with berry sauce
  • Pan-seared veal with truffle flavor
  • Creamy stew of mushrooms and chestnuts

Cultivation & Vinification

  • Producer: Domaine de la Pousse d'Or (Volnay, managed by Patrick Landanger since 1997)
  • Les Amoureuses is located on the upper part of an east-facing slope bordering Musigny, with soil composed of red clay and fractured limestone.
  • Biodynamic methods are employed, with regular vineyard cultivation without pesticides or herbicides.
  • Grapes are hand-harvested in small baskets, followed by three sorting passes at the winery.
  • Destemming percentage is adjusted between 75-100% depending on the vintage.
  • In 2021, a longer-than-usual cold maceration of 10-12 days was performed to aid color extraction.
  • After an average of 21 days of cuvaison, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (approx. 30% new oak), with barrel aging lasting approximately 12 months, and total aging on lees for 16-18 months.
  • Natural malolactic fermentation (late), no fining or filtration, gravity-fed racking and bottling.
  • 2021 is a rare vintage with a significant reduction in yield across Chambolle village due to spring frosts.
