2016 was a wetter year than 2015, which was very dry. The precipitation of 2015 fell in the first four months of 2016. The sun returned in June and the weather quickly improved. Three months of hot, dry weather in July reduced moisture and subsequently delayed ripening, but the old vines tolerated the conditions well.

Tasting note

Beautiful golden color. Fresh and delicate nose. Fruity aromas of yellow peach, sweet apricot and calamansi orange are felt at first, then evolve into mature aromas of vanilla, blonde caramel and spices. When exposed to air, rose flowers and spicy aromas spread. In the mouth, it has a soft and fresh attack, creamy and velvety texture, with aromas of red fruits, orange and sweet pineapple. The finish is elegant and fresh, with spices, sweet fruits, acacia honey and licorice.

Winemaking & technical data

Harvesting took place from 22 September to 9 November, with a total of four sortings. The first sorting began on 22 September after a storm on 20 September caused botrytis (noble rot). Very dry, hot summer weather caused raisinization in various places. The plots most affected by this form of concentration were harvested on 22 and 28 September, and again on 4 and 7 October. The harvest was rich with noticeable acidity.

The second selection began on the 11th of October, after the rains, and continued until the end of the month. The last two weeks were the best in terms of quality and quantity, during which more than 75% of the harvest took place. The fourth selection resumed at the beginning of November and was completed on the 9th.

2016 was a bountiful vintage with yields of over 22hl per hectare, making it a fruity and delicious vintage that is expected to age well.

Aged for 18 months in 50% new barrels and 50% once-used barrels.

Even with chilled delivery, a rapid change in temperature can cause slight seepage. This does not affect the quality of the wine, and we are unable to offer an exchange or refund in such cases. Every bottle is visually checked before packing.

Château Suduiraut

The History of the Château

Château Suduiraut has its origins in the marriage of Nicole Dallard and Léonard de Suduiraut in 1580. The château was destroyed during the Fronde but rebuilt in the 17th century, and at the end of the 18th century it passed to Jean Joseph Duroy and was renamed “Cru du Roy”. The coat of arms created at that time has been handed down to the present day.

In 1855 the estate was classified as a Premier Cru of Sauternes. In 1992 AXA Millésimes took over the château, carrying forward its exceptional expertise in the history and culture of wine. In doing so, it strives to draw out the full potential of a vineyard with a glorious history and to make it a truly great wine.

Terroir

The château holds HVE3 certification (the highest level of the High Environmental Value scheme) and comprises 91 hectares of vineyard on gravelly sandy-clay soils. The stones store the heat of the sun, and as a result the grapes ripen earlier. It is this distinctive terroir that gives the wines their richness.

Very free-draining and poor, the soils keep yields low, concentrate the fruit and encourage the vines to draw their nourishment from deep down.

Planting density is high at 7,000 vines/ha, and the vineyard is made up of old vines with an average age of 35 years. Sustainable growing practices, short pruning and careful soil work contribute further to quality. Selection is also made parcel by parcel, with only the finest grapes going into the top cuvées.

The plantings are made up of 80% Sémillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Sauvignon Gris.
