Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2020 Domaine Matrot

Matrot is a 6th generation domaine with excellent vineyards in Meursault and Puligny. They have practiced organic farming in all their vineyards since 2000 and are known for their meticulous winemaking. La Garenne is located high on a hill adjacent to the Saint-Aubin valley, with a terroir characterized by thin, calcium-rich soil and strong winds. The 2020 vintage is concentrated yet vibrant, with a lively acidity.

Tasting Notes

Pale greenish-gold in color. Aromas of white peach, nectarine, fresh almond, and white flowers like hawthorn elegantly unfold. On the palate, there is a rich, fatty texture, yet a nervy, taut acidity provides balance. The finish is clean and long, with a saline minerality. While enjoyable for its fruit charm in its youth, it will gain further complexity with 2-4 years of aging.

Viticulture and Winemaking

• A family-run domaine, taken over by the 6th generation sisters, Elsa and Adèle, from their father Thierry in 2016.
• Introduced "lutte raisonnée" (sustainable farming) in 1976, transitioning to fully organic farming across all vineyards in 2000.
• Thorough hygiene and temperature control of barrels, with slow fermentation over 8-10 weeks.
• Uses natural yeasts, with 100% malolactic fermentation.
• Aged for 11 months in 1-5 year old Burgundy barrels after racking and filtration.
• La Garenne is located on a southeast-facing hillside, with red soil at the bottom and lighter-colored soil at the top, and is significantly affected by strong winds.
• The soil is a very thin layer rich in calcium, characterized by a steep slope.
