Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1998 Pessac-Léognan
1998, a year that smiled on the Right Bank. The sensuality of Graves, with Merlot shining
Château La Mission Haut-Brion, the other jewel of Pessac-Léognan, faces Haut-Brion across the road. Its deep gravel and clay soils produce a dense red that combines opulence, a wild edge and smoky aromas. In 1998, Merlot harvested before the September rains enjoyed outstanding success — for this château, with its high proportion of Merlot, it was a vintage with the wind at its back.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet with a slight tinge of maturity at the rim. Ripe plum and black cherry layered with roasted coffee, smoked meat, leather, damp earth and the warm smokiness unique to this château. The palate is generous and fleshy; round, integrated tannins give a soft outline, and complex notes of earth and truffle linger long on the finish. A sensual glass of mature Graves.
Drinking Window
Now in the heart of its drinking window, and expected to hold until around 2033. It has thrown a sediment, so stand the bottle upright to rest, then decant gently.
