Mission Hill Family Estate
【Bringing the Okanagan to the world — the pioneer of Canadian wine】
Mission Hill Family Estate in West Kelowna was founded in 1981 by Anthony von Mandl with the aim of raising the Okanagan to the ranks of the world's great wine regions. In 1994 its 1992 Grand Reserve Chardonnay won the Avery Trophy for best Chardonnay at the IWSC, helping lift Canadian wine to an international standard.
The estate farms vineyards across five Okanagan sub-regions in harmony with nature: bees, falcons and chickens instead of pesticides, and cover crops, earthworms and compost instead of chemical fertilisers. Drones monitor vine vigour, and soil science decides where each variety is planted. Winemaking is rooted in Old-World technique, using concrete eggs, clay amphorae and a range of oak vessels.
The Legacy Collection draws on the top 1% of each harvest, hand-picked and hand-sorted, with long barrel ageing and 24 months in bottle. The Terroir Collection selects the top 3% to express differences of soil, clone and climate. The flagship Oculus, a Bordeaux-style blend first made in 1997, earned 100 points from John Schreiner for the 2020 vintage — the first Canadian red to do so.
In 2025 Mission Hill became the first Canadian winery named to the World's 50 Best Vineyards (No. 45). With its twelve-storey bell tower, an 800-barrel cellar blasted from volcanic rock and an outdoor amphitheatre of about 1,200 seats overlooking the valley, the estate is an emblem of the Okanagan.
