NUALA
Nuala
Pure expression of the terroir of Marlborough and Central Otago
A refined and elegant gourmet wine with a French sensibility
Founded in 2010 by a passionate Frenchman with years of wine industry experience, NUALA is located in Marlborough, New Zealand, the world-renowned region of Sauvignon Blanc. NUALA, meaning "purity" in Maori, creates elegant, expressive, and unique wines that express respect for both tradition and the land. Each cuvée, combining sharp, refined acidity, minerality derived from the calcareous soil, and refreshing aromas, maximizes its appeal as a gastronomic wine. Highly regarded on the global market, it has established a strong presence in fine restaurants around the world.
The ammonite logo is a homage to the soil that has nurtured NUALA for thousands of years, and symbolizes the minerality, refreshing feeling, and timeless beauty of NUALA.
In 2020, Paul Martung, a Bordeaux native, took over the winery. He expresses the innovative nature of New Zealand's soil, based on the spirituality and techniques he cultivated working with famous Bordeaux chateaux and organic and biodynamic producers in Australia.
NUALA is the product of the synergy between the spirit cultivated in Bordeaux and the potential of New Zealand soil. As a varietal with a parent company in Bordeaux, we are able to deliver the emotion expressed by this fusion of old and new through our wines.
Paul Martung
Paul Maltung
Originally from Bordeaux, France, he cultivated the attention to detail, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence he developed at Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux, and these qualities remain his guiding principles for winemaking to this day. Later, he worked with Will Rikard-Bell in Australia, where he introduced a thoroughly hands-off approach, and at Lowe Family Wines, where he learned through organic and biodynamic farming that "thoughtful, low-intervention farming methods can bring out the full character of the wine." His authentic experience, beliefs, and approach to nature have created a wonderful synergy in his winemaking in this fascinating new land of New Zealand, resulting in unique, elegant, and profound wines.
Marlborough
Marlborough
Marlborough, a producer of Sauvignon Blanc that has been highly acclaimed worldwide since the 1990s, has been gaining attention worldwide in recent years. Among the classic Sauvignon Blancs, Nuala delays the harvest to produce a refreshing, easy-to-drink white wine that is tropical and fruity, with less of a green character . Since its launch, NUALA's Sauvignon Blanc has been popular and served in a variety of restaurants around the world.
Central Otago
Central Otago
Since taking over the domaine, current winemaker Paul has been particularly devoted to Central Otago. Located at the southernmost wine-producing region in the world, it boasts a continental climate, a rarity for New Zealand. The Pinot Noir produced in this cool climate has captivated wine lovers from around the world. Paul sees great potential in Central Otago, and has been expanding his Pinot Noir vineyards since the 2022 vintage.
NUALA "Riesling" is also grown on this property.
Why make wine in New Zealand?
◆ The hidden magic of New Zealand wine
"New Zealand wine is still underrated in many parts of the world, which is surprising because it has such great appeal."
For Paul, New Zealand is a special place, full of hidden potential and incredible diversity: in just a few decades, the country has established itself as one of the world's leading wine regions, showcasing an incredible range of styles and varieties, all of the highest quality.
"I remain deeply impressed by how far we have come in such a short time . New Zealand wines have incredible vibrancy, clarity and character."
◆ The precision of the aroma and the power of Pinot Noir
Paul is particularly drawn to New Zealand's aromatic white wines, which he describes as having a "unique strength and intensity that can't be found anywhere else."
"A crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough or a Riesling from Central Otago – both have an electric feel to them."
He is also passionate about Pinot Noir, with Central Otago being Paul's current focus.
"The Pinot Noir from this region is truly beautiful and expressive. It has elegant aromas, refined tannins, and a solid structure that gives it great ageing potential. It is without a doubt a wine to be proud of on the world stage."
