Domaine de la Butte

[Innovation and passion, revealing the true worth of Bourgueil's terroir]

Acquired in 2002 by Jacky Blot — the celebrated winemaker behind La Taille aux Loups — Domaine de la Butte occupies one of the finest slopes in the Bourgueil appellation.

A pioneer in every sense, Jacky Blot rethought how Cabernet Franc is made, working organically to produce wines that are modern, precise and deep.

Planted on south-facing limestone, the vines enjoy one of the outstanding terroirs of the Loire's right bank. Refusing every compromise, Jacky Blot worked without insecticides or synthetic chemicals, farming in a way that respects nature. The fruit is picked by hand, carefully sorted in the vineyard, and aged in used barrels so that its purity is never masked.

Since Jacky's passing, his son Jean-Philippe has taken up the estate, supporting the family winery with the same passion and a fresh perspective, and carrying its future forward.

Each cuvée is bottled according to its parcel. Le Haut de la Butte, for instance, comes from the plots at the very top of the hill, and shows the delicacy and tension that limestone soils give.

Jacky Blot did much to raise the standing of the great white wines of Montlouis, and he is equally recognised as one of the leading authorities on Cabernet Franc — a legacy Jean-Philippe carries on with conviction. The cuvées of Domaine de la Butte are true expressions of their terroir, and stand today among the very finest wines made in Bourgueil.
