Bodega Katxiña
Bodega Katxiña
[A singular lightly sparkling wine, born of Basque wind and passion]
Founded in 2014 to bring a wider audience to the Txakoli the family had been making for generations, the bodega owns eight hectares of vines that wrap around the winery buildings.
The vineyards are terraced on a south-facing slope running gently down towards the mouth of the Oria, trained on trellis and pergola. The site was chosen for the gentle wind off the Cantabrian Sea, which makes conditions ideal for ripening.
Bodega Katxiña lies about twenty minutes by car from San Sebastián, in the Basque Country's great gastronomic heartland, and it makes just this one wine.
The family originally ran a well-known restaurant in the nearby town of Orio, where they served a small quantity of homemade wine. Wanting more people to share in it, son Iñaki and daughter Izaskun opened a new restaurant with its own winery attached in 2013.
In 2019 the restaurant took the top global prize in the charcoal-grill category at the World Luxury Awards, and the wine itself has won admirers well beyond the Basque Country — Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth and his wife, the Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, along with footballer Takefusa Kubo, have all slipped in quietly to try it.
